Typically, freezers should get colder than fridges and that is why they are used to preserve food a longer period of time. To confirm if the freezers’ temperatures are ideal, use a thermometer and better yet, a digital one. A digital thermometer can predict the rising and dropping of temperature better than the customary mercury filled thermometers. If you do not have the device, ask the dealer or salesman to lend you his. But, make sure the freezer is able to attain the desired temperatures before you leave the shop.

Door gaskets

Look out for the condition of the freezer’s door gaskets. The gasket is responsible for keeping the coldness inside. A unit with a worn out gasket cannot be as efficient as it should be. You need to ensure that the lid produces a good tight seal. To test it, close it tightly then pull it out. If it opens easily, then it is not sealing well enough. You can evaluate another freezer or just buy it since the gasket can inexpensively and simply be replaced.


The thermostat plays an important role in maintaining the temperatures inside the freezer. It also has the functions of controlling the compressor. A spoilt thermostat can prevent the freezer from shutting down on temperature and cause severe damage to the compressor. Make sure that the thermostat is working properly before you buy the unit.

Coils and Motor

Check the back of the freezer and verify if the motor and coils are in good condition. Pay special attention to rust which should not be present; it is a sign of serious problems. The best way to tell if the coils and motor are working well is when the freezer has been on for a longer period of time. Call and ask the dealer to switch it on before you visit the shop. This way, you will be able to confirm the workability of the parts as well as the operating noise levels.
